Changing winter light

These images were captured a couple of days ago and a few minutes apart. I’m always amazed at how different a scene can look under different lighting conditions.

Cans

I’ve driven by this trailer in Derry frequently, and mentally filed it away as a possible interesting photo. The winter morning light was beautiful today, so I decided to take advantage of it. I like how the angle of the top of the pile of cans matches the angle of the handrail.

Backyard beaver update

esterly-120105-0104-web

The beaver pond is frozen over now, with beaver-chewed trees sticking out of the ice. That’s our neighbor’s house in the background. Another neighbor has hired a trapper to get rid of the beavers (their yard is most threatened by the growing water level). Getting rid of these “varmints” is necessary to avoid additional property damage from the water and mud, in addition to the tree damage. But it’s kind of too bad. I guess we humans should all just be glad we’re not beavers.

Order out of chaos

esterly-120105-0096-web

When I was out photographing yesterday I found myself concentrating on hidden shapes and unexpected alignments. Just bringing order out of chaos, I guess. And, now that I think about it, that’s really what photographers and other visual artists do.

E. Gorey’s Great Simple Theory About Art

esterly-111224-0040-web

I ran across this quote by artist Edward Gorey recently on The Atlantic, and it rang true for me:

“This is the theory … that anything that is art … is presumably about some certain thing, but is really always about something else, and it’s no good having one without the other, because if you just have the something it is boring and if you just have the something else it’s irritating.” – Edward Gorey, 1968

Exhibit at The Provident Bank

I’m currently participating in a group show at The Provident Bank branch in Hampton, NH. The exhibit, titled “See What I Saw”, includes 30 recent photographs by some members of the NHAA Photo Group: Kristin Burchsted, me, John Hauschildt, Ken Kartes, Dick Lord, Eva Powers, Mike Sterling, Lin Wickett, and Tom Wright. The above image by Lin Wickett shows some of the photographs in the bank’s lobby area; the other work is distributed throughout the bank. Although a bank is not a perfect venue for viewing artwork, The Provident Bank’s hanging system is very nice and even the artwork displayed in offices and the conference room is visible from the lobby area. Thank you, Provident Bank, for supporting local artists.

The show particulars:

  • Location – The Provident Bank, 321 Lafayette Road, Hampton NH 03842
  • When – Dec 10, 2011 through Mar 3, 2012
  • Hours – M–F 8am–7pm, Sat 9am–1pm, Sun 10am–2pm
  • Reception – Thursday Jan 26, 2012 from 5:30–7pm

If you happen to be on the NH seacoast, stop by and take a peek. Everyone in this photo group does very nice work. Here are my contributions to this show (click to enlarge; use the back button in your browser to return to this page instead of the gallery page):

Beavers in the backyard

esterly-111121-1500-web

They’re baaack… Some eight years ago or so we had a problem with a beaver family building a dam in the creek that runs through our property. They caused some minor flooding in the neighborhood and damaged a lot of trees until the critters were relocated. Recently we’ve seen some pretty “damming” evidence that there are new beavers in the wetland area behind our house. No flooding or tree damage to any neighborhood property yet, so we’re keeping our fingers crossed. By the way, that’s an eight or nine inch diameter oak tree that’s almost gnawed through.

Fall shrubbery

Our overgrown shrubbery looks nice in the fall, but it’s beginning to block the view from the kitchen window. Some trimming may be in order.
